A NEW super-strain of highly drug-resistant gonorrhoea has spread into Scunthorpe.
One of the main treatments for the sexually-transmitted infection – the antibiotic azithromycin – has proven ineffective against the strain.
The outbreak, which is centred on Scunthorpe and the Leeds area, has triggered a national alert.
Twelve cases have been confirmed in Leeds since the outbreak started in March with a further four in Scunthorpe, Macclesfield and Oldham.
