KIRTON tunnel was a major feature on the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway mainline and is still in use today.
However, the importance of this line as a passenger route has long since been overtaken by the alternative route through Scunthorpe, Doncaster and Barnetby.
Today there is only a passenger service calling at Kirton and Brigg stations on Saturdays – just three trains in each direction between Sheffield and Cleethorpes via Barnetby.
